Your Personal German Study Plan

Why a structured study plan matters

Without a clear plan, many German learners lose momentum. An individual plan helps you systematically improve your level, choose the right course type, and realistically assess how much time you need to reach your goal. The CEFR guidelines provide clear benchmarks: to move from A1 to B1, most learners need between 200 and 350 teaching units.

What is your current German level?

Frequently asked questions about your German study plan

How reliable are the CEFR time estimates?

The time estimates (e.g. A1→A2: ~80 teaching units) are averages from the Council of Europe for adult learners with a European mother tongue. Learners with Asian languages often need 50–100% more time.

What is the difference between an intensive course and an evening course?

An intensive course typically covers 20–30 teaching units per week (full-time), while an evening course covers 6–10. With an intensive course you can reach the same level in a fraction of the calendar time.

Which exam do I need for a study visa?

German universities usually require TestDaF (level 4 in all parts) or DSH (level 2). Start preparing at least 9 months before the start of your studies.

Is A1 German enough for family reunification?

For family reunification with a German citizen, A1 is sufficient (evidenced by Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc Start Deutsch 1). This requirement does not apply for EU citizens.

How often should I adjust my study plan?

Review your progress every 4 weeks. If you are learning faster than planned, increase the hourly target. If you fall behind, push back a milestone.

Which apps are free and recommended?

Duolingo (daily routine), Anki (spaced repetition for vocab), DW Learn German (free structured courses), Tandem (language partner). For grammar: 'Der Die Das' app or Scobel.
