What is the placement test?
The placement test helps the school assess your current level. You’ll be placed in the right course (A1–C2) and learn more efficiently.
Why it matters
Starting at the right level saves time and money. Too low means slow progress; too high means frustration. The test ensures the best fit.

Is there an Aufnahmeprüfung at language schools?
No — most language schools do not set a real entrance exam. What they do have is a free placement test (Einstufungstest) that establishes your current level so that you start in the right course (A1–C2). The test is not a condition of admission: it only decides which group you join.
How does the placement test work?
The placement test usually takes 20–60 minutes and consists of grammar and vocabulary questions (multiple choice, 20–30 minutes), a short listening section (5–10 minutes) and sometimes a 5–10 minute conversation with a teacher. There is no passing or failing — the result only determines the level you start at.
Do I need to prepare for the placement test?
No, preparation is not necessary — and it can even backfire. The test is meant to show your real current level. If you cram beforehand, you end up in a course that is too advanced and understand little of what happens in class. Answer honestly and leave out questions you do not know: an unanswered question will not distort the result.
Can I take the placement test online?
Yes, most schools offer an online placement test that you take on your own computer before you travel, and the result is saved automatically. If anything is unclear, or if your listening and speaking are far apart from your written German, there is often a short re-check with a teacher on site when the course starts.
What if the course turns out to be too easy or too hard after the test?
Most language schools let you move up or down a level free of charge within the first 3–5 days of the course if the placement result does not fit. Speak to your teacher or the school office straight away — the earlier you switch, the less course content you miss.
Is there an entrance exam for university preparation courses?
University preparation courses (a Studienkolleg, the German preparatory college, or DSH preparation, for example) usually do have a structured entrance test that proves a minimum level, normally B1. It is more demanding than a placement test, so preparing for it is worth the effort. If you do not pass, you can often take a general language course first and sit the test again later.
Does the placement test cost extra?
No — at virtually all private language schools and Volkshochschulen (municipal adult education centres) the placement test is free, whether or not you go on to register for a course. A few schools charge a small fee (€10–30) if the test is taken on site including an oral part and you do not enrol afterwards.
