How do I apply to a language school in Germany?
Applying to a private language school is straightforward: (1) pick your course and dates, (2) fill in the online registration form, (3) upload a copy of your passport, (4) pay the registration fee (€20–120), (5) receive your confirmation by email. For an Integrationskurs (state-funded integration course) you first apply to the BAMF or your Jobcenter for an entitlement to attend.
Which documents do I need for the application?
The standard set is a copy of your passport, the completed registration form and proof of payment. Depending on your purpose, add certificates from earlier language courses or exams (Goethe A2, telc B1 and similar), a motivation letter (needed for the visa), proof of funding (confirmation that a Sperrkonto — a blocked account — has been opened, or a bank statement) and proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherung).
How do I write a motivation letter for a language school?
The motivation letter (one page, in English or German) should explain why you are learning German (study, career, family), why you want to learn it in Germany specifically, your current level and your target level, and what you plan to do afterwards. Structure it in three paragraphs: background, motivation, goal. Keep it honest and concrete — avoid stock phrases.
How far in advance do I have to apply?
Two to four weeks of lead time is enough for a regular intensive course. If you need a visa, book three to four months ahead — visa processing takes 6–12 weeks, plus a buffer for the paperwork. Waiting times for Integrationskurse vary widely by region (1–6 months). Popular summer courses (July/August) are booked out early, so plan 3+ months in advance.
Can I apply for several courses at the same time?
You can apply to different courses, but a visa always refers to one specific course period. If you want to move to another course later, that is usually unproblematic within the same school (new placement test, new group allocation). If you switch to a different school, the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) has to be informed.
Can I withdraw my application and get my money back?
Refunds depend on the school's terms and conditions. The usual pattern: a full refund minus a processing fee (around €50) up to 30 days before the course starts, then a sliding scale of 50–70%. If your visa is refused, many schools refund the course fee in full (minus the processing fee) once you show the written rejection. Read the terms before you pay.
What happens if my visa is refused?
If your visa is refused, the embassy issues a written decision. Send it to your language school — most schools then refund the course fees in full (the registration fee usually stays). Alternatively you can move your course to a later date. You can also file a Remonstration (formal appeal) against the refusal within one month — worth doing if you have new documents to submit.
