Topics
General
How much does a language course cost?
Group courses are often €120–350/month, intensive courses €350–900/month. Private lessons cost about €35–80/hour. Enrollment and materials may be extra.
Which certificates are available?
For German: telc, Goethe, TestDaF, DSH. For other languages: IELTS/TOEFL, DELF/DALF, DELE and others.
How do I find the right level?
Most schools offer free placement tests. Levels follow CEFR from A1/A2 to C1/C2.
Can I switch schools during a course?
Generally yes, but fees and curricula may differ. With funding, approval may be required.
Placement & start
How does the placement test work?
Usually 30–60 minutes online or on site. Reading, listening, grammar and writing are tested, sometimes a short interview.
When can I start?
Many schools start monthly or every 4–6 weeks. Exam prep often starts 4–8 weeks before the exam.
Funding & financing
Can I get funding?
Yes, e.g., BAMF integration courses, education vouchers or educational leave. Requirements depend on the program.
What is a BAMF integration course?
A subsidized German course (600–900 lessons). With eligibility, costs are low; it ends with the DTZ exam (B1).
Can I deduct the course from taxes?
If job‑related, costs may be tax‑deductible as training expenses.
What is an education voucher?
A funding program by the Job Center/Employment Agency that can cover course costs if job‑related.
Accreditations & quality
What are accreditations and why important?
Accreditations (telc, Goethe, EAQUALS, BAMF, etc.) indicate quality standards and may be required for visas or funding.
How to recognize a good school?
Look for accreditations, qualified teachers, small groups, transparent pricing and good reviews.
telc vs Goethe – what’s the difference?
Both are recognized. telc is often cheaper and practical; Goethe is very well‑known internationally. Choose based on your goal.
Course types
Intensive or evening course – which is better?
Intensive is faster but time‑heavy; evening is flexible but slower.
Online or on‑site – which is more effective?
On‑site offers interaction, online offers flexibility. Hybrid combines both.
What is a good class size?
Ideally 6–12 participants for more speaking time and support.
What is a hybrid course?
A mix of on‑site and online classes, e.g., 3 days in person + 2 online.
Visa & residence
Do I need a visa?
EU citizens don’t. Non‑EU citizens usually need a language‑course visa with proof of enrollment and funds.
Can I work on a language‑course visa?
A pure language‑course visa usually does not allow work.
How long does the visa process take?
Often 6–12 weeks. Apply at least 3 months before the start date.
